Using AI feels free for the person at the keyboard. No bill, no meter, no warning. But it is never free for the world around us - every prompt, retry, and regeneration draws on fresh water, electricity, and the planet's reserves. This is the letter behind that idea, and what MockupTown is trying to do about it.
The water bill nobody sends you
Data centers need cooling, and cooling needs water. Researchers at the University of California, Riverside estimate that training GPT-3 consumed about 700,000 gallons (2.6 million liters) of fresh water just to keep its data center cool. That's per model, before a single user ever typed a prompt.
The same analysis found that a single ChatGPT conversation of 20-50 tokens uses roughly half a liter of water - about one standard bottle - evaporated to dissipate heat. Now multiply that by the tens of millions of conversations served every single day.
Training one large AI model can use millions of liters of fresh water. A single conversation can drink half a liter. The bill is real, and it's paid in the world's water.
The energy bill, too
It is not only water. Researchers at Hugging Face and Carnegie Mellon measured that generating a single AI image can consume about as much electricity as fully charging a smartphone, and text responses run on the same hungry infrastructure.
The International Energy Agency projects that by 2026, AI, cryptocurrency, and data centers together could draw more electricity than the entire country of Japan uses in a year.
The quiet cost of every retry
Here is the part I think about most. A mockup is rarely right on the first pass. You make a mistake, you tweak the prompt, you regenerate, you try again. Every one of those "free" drafts is another API call, another gallon of cooling water, another chunk of borrowed electricity.
